OCTOBER 2005 NEWS:
It’s been a long time since I last did a newsletter, but I’ve been quite a busy Bob. In between touring the U.S. with Truxton (the road penguin), exploring Mayan ruins in the Yucatan, shaking hands with William Topley, putting motorcyclists in the hospital, fiddling with the next “Best of BFN” album and successfully nailing . . . uh, one band interview after the next this semester (yeah, that’s it!), I haven’t had the opportunity to sit down and tell you what’s going on.
However, October tends to be Bob’s time to shine, so it’s important that I keep you informed about all the good stuff that’s going down this month. After all, how in the hell can I expect you to party with BFN if you don’t know where to go, how to get there, when to arrive, why you shouldn’t talk back to the guy at the door and/or what slinky undergarments to wear? (FYI: Ladies, slinky undergarments are optional – you’re free to wear no undergarments at all. Men, if it involves women in sexy undergarments, you’re not invited. Seriously.)
That said, take note:
October 1 – Night of the Living Dredg
Still going strong thanks to great press and an incredibly enthusiastic push from Interscope Records, Modern Prog rockers Dredg return to Chicago to further promote their latest release Catch Without Arms. Limbless or not, you should see what all the fuss is about.

October 2 – Dawn of the Danko Jones
Danko Jones circles back to Chicago in less than a month – this time to open up for fellow Canadian rockers Our Lady Peace. Sounds like an awesome show. Too bad it’s at a lousy venue.

October 3 - The Great Michigan Cow Hop
This is the 6th year anniversary of the Great Michigan Cow Hop. Bob Dubilina, Psycho Dave, Madison Rosbar and Acid Junkie ran over a dead cow on Highway 131 in Michigan on this fateful night at 3:35 a.m. CT. We're still alive, the car's finally dead (R.I.P., Gripper) and that damn cow has most certainly gone to pasture by now (we hope), so we're celebrating. . . WITH MEAT! The theme for this month is BEEF, people, so get out there and gorge away.
October 6-20 – 41st Chicago International Film Festival
The Chicago International Film Festival – the only Chicago event that Bob wets himself over – is here! If you'd like to party with the BFN gang, check out BobbyDobbyD’s CIFF 2005 Schedule to see what movies I’ll be checking out. Due to all the rock stars coming to town, I won’t be able to see as many films as usual this year; however, that doesn’t mean you still can’t smuggle a few bags of Hot Tamales into the theater for me. (If I’m not there, just tape them under the seat!)

October 7 – Welcome Back, Mr. Joplin!
After taking three years off to do whatever it is domesticized/desperate folk singers do, Josh Joplin is back on the scene with a new solo album and bunch of tour dates. Well, it’s about fuckin’ time! What the fuck has he been doing all these months? Protesting the war? Making peace quilts? What kind of silly bullshit is this?
Seriously, though, if there’s one concert you need to attend this month, THIS IS IT! Won’t you help BFN give everybody’s favorite folkie a hearty homecoming?

October 11 – The Phantom of the Porcupine Tree
Porcupine Tree returns for their second Stateside tour this year in support of their sonic powerhouse Deadwing. If you missed them last May, now’s your chance to once again witness one of the best live acts around today.

October 12 – The Exorcism of David Gray
Speaking of great live acts, David Gray would be an excellent follow-up to the witty folk songs of Josh Joplin and the dark imagery of Porcupine Tree. Rarely do you see a singer win his audience over with such grace. Trust me, you will not regret spending whatever it takes to see this show.

October 13-14 – The Mountain Goats of the Damned
Interested in getting your heartstrings tugged? Come on over to the Open-End Gallery (10/13) or The Empty Bottle (10/14) this month to watch The Mountain Goats perform songs from The Sunset Tree, frontman John Darnielle’s incredibly frank, haunting and heart-breaking account of growing up with an abusive stepfather.

October 14 – Silver Bonamassa
Come with me to the incredibly swank Chord On Blues in St. Charles, IL to experience the mind-shattering power blues of guitar wunderkind Joey B. Hook up with an older woman while you're at it, too. Rock on! Rock on, indeed!

October 15 – Rock‘n’Roll Overkill: Tracy Chapman, Mike Doughty & The Ike Reilly Assassination
Tracy Chapman stops by the The Riv to promote her newest release Where You Live. With seven studio albums – all of them fantastic – under her belt, it’s certain that you won’t be disappointed with this set.

www.rivieratheatre.com
Meanwhile, former Soul Coughing frontman Mike Doughty will be performing new songs from the outstanding Haughty Melodic at Park West.

After you decide between Chapman and Doughty, breathe easy knowing that you’ll still have plenty of time to race over to the Double Door to watch The Ike Reilly Assassination celebrate the recent release of Junkie Faithful. You don’t want to miss the lean and mean Mr. Reilly wildly toss out his delightfully cynical lyrics to a packed house. You’ll be stomping your feet and chanting along with the crowd in no time. (And if you drink too much, you can always sleep on the train!)

October 20 - I Bury The Navigators!
Enjoy the rollicking bluegrass-tinged bar rock of The Navigators at the local Wise Fools Pub. These guys are the new BFN favorites, so come on out and see what I've been ranting and raving about for the past six months.

October 29 – The Serpent and the Guster
When will these guys release their new album? They’ve been tinkering on the final product for months now! C’mon already! Let’s hear it! What are you waiting for, fuckers! (Oh yeah, get wild with good ol’ Guster at The Riv.)

October 30 (Nevada)/31 (rest of the world) - Halloween
Well, well, if it isn't the one holiday that you can shamelessly flaunt your fetishes and “pretend” that it's all a big joke. (Right, Chad?) As of this time, I have no clue whatsoever what I’ll be doing (or who’ll I’ll be sacrificing) for All Hallowes Eve, so if you have any suggestions, post ‘em here!
FYI: There’s a good possibility that BFN will have a chance to interview Dredg, Josh Joplin, Porcupine Tree, David Gray, Tracy Chapman and Mike Doughty this month. Better yet, Joe Bonamassa and The Navigators have already RSVP’d for an in-studio visit. For further info, go here. (If you don’t see any updates, keep checking!)
Last but not least, don't forget to grab a copy of Ray Bradbury's The October Country! This is his month, too!

P.S. Oh yeah, did I tell you that I have the COOLEST GIRLFRIEND EVER! Well, I do. And if you can’t guess why, you obviously need to check out the September 14, 2005 episode of BFN Networks. Enjoy!
