Pete Yorn / Day I Forgot
This is quite simply an amazing album. I get the distinct feeling that Pete treats song writing as a craft, and it shows when hear this album... it's a great blend on regret, hopefulness, and music that isn't whiney and tired. Here's an album worth considerable attention.
Must-hear track: Crystal Village
James Kochalka Superstar / Monkey vs. Robot
Don't ever make the mistake of taking James Kochalka too seriously. A seemingly perpetual outsider, his album Monkey vs. Robot isn't for everyone. Some topics won't work for you. And not every track will make you happy. But the ones that do will totally have you singing along, if only for their absurdity. My main concern is with replayability and how will stand the test of time... only one way to find out.
Must-hear track: Monkey vs. Robot (of course)
Dot Allison / We Are Science
Hm. Kinda slow and sultry. Which is good. But the beat is a bit too heavy to make this a sex-boom-boom-sex album. Perfect for strip clubs and German BDSM sessions. Think Massive Attack meets Beth Orton.
Must-hear track: You Can Be Replaced
The Lost Trailers / Welcome to the Woods
So if you have their first minor label albums, this one won't come as much of a surprise. That said, it's a good collection of their better songs, with anew one or two thrown into the mix. If you've never heard of the Lost Trailers, think lighter-coutry-rock. Yes, there's a twang in the singer's voice, but there's rock going on here too. It's enjoyable, if not everyone's cup of tea.
Must-hear track: Longfall
Finley Quaye / Much More Than Much Love
Easily one of the best albums of this year. Finley's voice is evocative of Bob Marley's, but his music tends to shy a little away from reggae in favor of a rock sensibility. It deals with fresh takes on the usual topics of relationships and love. Don't make any mistakes, though... this is a soulful, well-assembled set of songs that is easily enjoyed, like a coke and rum on the beach.
Must-hear track: Dice
