Chad Wilkens' Top Ten of 2002
1. Joseph Arthur / Redemption's Son
Suggested Tracks: Whole Album
Easily his most accessible album to date, Redemption's Son represesnts the continuing refinement that goes on inside the Head of Joseph Arthur.
2. Dirty Vegas / Dirty Vegas
Suggested Tracks: Days Go By, Simple Things, Throwing Shapes, Candles
A strong album of Electronica-inspired grooves and deeper-than-imagined moods make this album the surprise of the year.
3. David Gray / A New Day at Midnight
Suggested Tracks: Dead in the Water, Real Love, Knowhere
While more accessible than White Ladder, A New Day at Midnight doesn't surpass it's predecessor... I guess this is a testament to how strong boths CDs are.
4. KMFDM / Attak
Suggested Tracks: Superhero, Save Me, Sleep
The Number One welcome comeback of 2002 was KMFDM. And this CD shows that they have progressed, not just rehashing past styles, but expanding their repartoire.
5. Porupine Tree / In Absentia
Suggested Tracks: The Sound of Muzak, Heartattack in a Layby, Trains
The Dark Horse. Bob's the one into the Tree, and when he wasn't around, I went to a show. Boy, I didn't realize what I was missing.
6. Coldplay / A Rush of Blood to the Head
Suggested Tracks: In My Place, Green Eyes, Amsterdam
Half on my list just because I believe that this must be the biggest band we've met as of yet... this album hit me hard, and left a strong impression.
7. Morcheeba / Charango
Suggested Tracks: Sao Paulo, Get Alone
Reinforces Morcheeba's reputation of being the masters of Trip-Hop. Great chill music, and Women Loose Weight has to be one of the funniest songs ever.
8. Indigo Girls / Become You
Suggested Tracks: Starkville, Yield
I'm a sucker for the female voice, and boy do these females have voices. Great lyrics and a downhome style make this one I've played a million times over.
9. Eels / Souljacker
Suggested Tracks: Woman Driving, Man Sleeping, World of Shit
E sticks it to you hard on this one; either you like it or you don't, and this was one of the first CDs of 2002 that had me hitting repeat.
10. Howie Day / Austrailia
Suggested Tracks: Slow Down, Kristina
While technically a 2000 release, this CD got its major label debut in 2002, when I got my grubby fingers on it... and didn't let go. Haunting.
