Flaming Lips / Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The best damn contemporary Prog Rock album in a long time. I don't think I've heard anything this vivid since Mercury Rev's All Is Dream. A concept album about Man vs. Machine that actually cheers for the survival of mankind, Yoshimi touches more on the emotions that make us human rather than focus on the faults that may someday signify our doom. There's plenty peace and love in this Flaming Lips futuristic drama for everyone, so smile and live life accordingly.
Suggested Tracks: WHOLE ALBUM
Flaming Lips / The Soft Bulletin - This is the predecessor to Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. It's conceptually a collection of songs from a handful of imaginary art-house cult films worthy of grandiose acid tripping. Please make sure that you flow with this music in a better social environment than the dorms. You don't need a drunken wannabe frat boy bunnyinâ up the colors (This album is also guaranteed to complement that Pink Floyd archive you recently inherited after moving in with that burn-out who disappeared the second week of school and left all his stuff behind).
Suggested Tracks: A Spoonful Weighs a Ton, The Spiderbite Song, What is the Light?, Sleeping on the Roof
Porcupine Tree / Stupid Dream - Another magnificent addition to the realm of Prog Rock, this time with a healthy scoop of metal for extra measure. If you want a darker tone to your melodic progressive structures, these guys will dim the lights and unfold the drama. A little love, a little loss, a little pain, a little joy. With a name like Porcupine Tree, how could you NOT like this band?
Suggested Tracks: WHOLE ALBUM
Neil Young / After the Goldrush - I don't care what Chad-o says, Neil Young is a lyrical powerhouse (Chad-o says "My ass itches and you play Neil Young? I don't think so."). [/i]After the Goldrush[/i] is one of his earliest and strongest works, written with a mixture of emotions ranging from righteousness to desolation that only an old soul in a young heart can capture. Even if it's too soft for BFN, After the Goldrush is a classic.
Suggested Tracks: Tell Me Why, After the Goldrush, Southern Man, When You Dance You Can Really Love
David Bowie / Heathen - You miss the Rock God Bowie of yore? Put this album on and groove. You miss the new Futuristic Discoteque Bowie of last year? Put this album on and groove. Well, what the bunny are you waiting for?
Suggested Tracks: Cactus, Slow Burn, Everyone Says Hi
Peter Gabriel / Ovo - The Millennium Dome Show - Peter Gabriel is a bunnying GOD! Why are you even reading this? You should be at PeterGabriel.com buying this album and anything else with his name on it.
Suggested Tracks: WHOLE ALBUM
Youssou N'Dour / Joko (The Link) - Senegal's most prized possession has one of the most passionate voices in the world. Now if only I could understand what the hell he was saying most of the time...
Suggested Tracks: Wiri-Wiri, This Dream
Lucero / Tennessee - It's official: we have a new BFN Spotlight Artist. With a voice heavily influenced by Kurt Cobain (or as Chad-o would argue, Gavin Rosdale), Ben Nichols sings the gritty alt-country ballads in which he laments of days gone by and loves turned away. You'll need this one when she breaks your heart and takes off with your wheels, leaving you with the realization that that '67 Dodge Dart was truly one of a kind.
